WEATHER
CONDITIONS
Weather conditions: |
| Spring was early and prolonged. Snow cover reduced to 50% before 8.06, and melted completely from level areas by 15.06. Ice broke before our arrival on 8.06, but ice was still moving on the Longotyegan River and water table was high on all rivers on that date. Thunderstorm with rain occurred on 15.06. Mean daily temperatures rised above freezing point on 8.06, reaching +6øC at day time and dropping to -7øC at night. Warm and dry weather established from 15.06-1.07, with a few short-term thunderstorms. Weather conditions in the second half of spring and summer were favourable for birds. Short-term drop of temperatures in early July had probably no adverse impact on bird breeding. However, the periods of migration and displays were probably contracted in most species due to the weather.

Breeding conditions:
Numbers of Jacksnipes, Red-necked Phalaropes and European Golden Plovers were probably high, although no information for comparison is available for other years. Potential predators did not occurr in high numbers. Rough-legged Buzzards laid eggs in a single territory of 3 occupied, and numbers of skuas were low. Three Ravens stayed in the river vicinity for several days. Siberian Newt Salamandrella keyserlingii was abundant and bred.
Rodent dynamics:
| Number of Siberian Lemmings were low overall, although locally undersnow nests were common near edges of bogs and cottongrass shoots were destroyed completely. Voles were common and apparently increasing but did not reach high numbers.

Rodent species recorded:
| Latin | Abundance |
| Lemmus sibiricus | rare |
| Microtus middendorffi | common |
| Microtus gregalis | common |
